celandine for ritual

Right below our feet we have sacred plants and we don’t even know it.

I will preface this and say I am not an expert or a Herbalist! I create ritual, and I use what’s available. This is important for me to stay connected to the land, and honour what’s here, while giving my gratitude for those who walked before me.

I have been slowly learning about plants and herbs, I wanted to share that journey with you. I am very much a beginner, but sharing this is not only a creative outlet for me but also a deep passion for Mother Nature. So lets start this series with Greater Celandine:)

Celandine flowers in a white vase

Greater Celandine is not native to Canada, it was Brough by European settlers because it was an important healing plant! This plant loves human disturbed soil, you will notice it growing around new builds, especially where farmland once was. I literally picked this out my front door, where landscaping is yet to be completed!

Greater Celandine is part of the poppy family as is also know as “swallow wart” or “devils milk”, it is highly toxic if ingested improperly and could cause liver damage, it was used for curing warts, cars and ringworm, and if you were on the prairies this plant would have been an important addition to a backyard apothecary!

The bright yellow sap can be irritating to the skin, and it is not recommended to be made into a tea, and should be kept away from children and animals. The healing properties of this plant are for external uses!

Now to the Ritual uses:) My Fav! Greater Celandine has been used for legal protection, that if you put a sprig of Celandine in your shoe, or carried it in a red flannel pouch against your bare skin, you would win any lawsuit, escape unfair imprisonment and find favour with judges.

Placing it under your door mat, or around your home is said to not let any negative energy or unwanted guests to enter your home! Witches would wear it for protection, and people would wash there floors with it, to repel witches…allegedly!

Through my research and folklore, the common Ritual threads are Protection, Boundaries, Path Clearing and legal success!

when it comes to Rituals I like to keep it simple! It becomes just part of your day, and creates a connection with slowing down, being intentional and feeling the power that’s right at our feet.

If you made it this far, that you, and also there will be more:) I want to also create a series for the podcast about ritual plants that are easily accessible, and powerful additions to any ritual. So stay tuned for that:)

With Love,

Delain

P.s I would love to know your thoughts, and what are some plants you would love to learn about? I have list going for this series, but I would love to have more:)
